Specifically, take a look at Darren's comments and proposed plans to "privatize" or possibly eliminate FOAF altogether on tribe.

This is because a web company has been harvesting tribe members network information (their tribe friends data), along with birthdays, etc from tribe using FOAF. Follow this thread and the developing story and technical ramifications on tribe...if it interests you...

Upload or import of FOAF to Tribe

At what point during registration is a new user prompted to upload FOAF data? I've created two new profiles in order to import alternate FOAF data, but couldn't find any prompt or visual cue to do so. Please advise.

1) does anyone have a contact? As their foaf-matic doesn't work i.e. I get nothing in the box at the end and pressing the "foaf me" button just sends you back to the home page.

2) does anyone have the output for this process? I assume given a simple foaf file, that I can edit it with a text editor to what I need.

3) do you then just link it like any other html page on your webserver?

4) or is this just another high level wank off.

Who else makes use of the tribe foafs?

Does anyone know if other sites make use the tribe foafs?

I belong to at least two communities now that use foaf (tribe and ELGG) and it seems like it would be better to list and update my profile in one place of my choosing and then reuse that profile.

Google Maps & FOAF

I discovered 2 things:
The FOAF data has my location Latitude & Longitude
The Google Map site allows that so of data as input

But I also see where people have hacked Google Maps to put Pictures in the window locator.

How can we pull the location data from The FOAF and Have a map come up with the person's profile pic inset into the locator?

connection paths between users

Say I have a Friend Table where there are basically two fields.

How do i show the path between two users in the tribe.net "friend who has a friend who has a friend" way?

It looks right now that you can view anyone's FOAF profile. Which means you can view peoples birthdays and such that they may not want to be public.

OK... I just joined this tribe to try and get an answer to this question.

Why when i click on a person who has one of these profiles, do i only get a screen full of HTML jumk. I have talked to several other folks on tribe who have the same issue.

What the heck is an FOAf profile, and why bother having one if no-one can read it?

Foafnet questions

1) To support foafnet, you just need to have the ability to export/import foaf, and the UI to enable this?

2) If I was signing up at a foafnet enabled site, is the idea that I would import my foaf date from:

a) my blog/site?
b) some central site?

3) I can see wanting to import info about yourself when joining a new site, but importing/exporting friends seems like it could be trickier. For example, if I am a member of 3 foaf sites and on each of those sites I have 20 contacts, do I update some central file so that it has 60 contacts? Or is the idea that if I was going to join a 4th site that I would have to choose one of my three foaf files to use?

sorry if there questions are lame, but I am tryin to get up to speed on this

Cryptic error msg from tribe FOAF parser

What are you guys using for a parser, to read in FOAF RDF files?

the FOAF looks OK.

I'm assuming that you've built the FOAF importer on top of a reasonably solid
RDF parser, eg. Jena/ARP, which is the same code that lives behind
http://www.w3.org/RDF/Validator

Is it possible to get more detailed error reporting? Or share as opensource the loading code, so we can see what's up?

FOAF import and export now on Tribe

We launched the new Tribe.net today and support many of the FOAFNet features that we have been discussing at www.foafnet.org.

You can upload your FOAF file (for new users) and see who is already on the system. FOAF is also used for rapid registration (close to one click)

We also expose all users FOAF files in a way very similar to eCademy.

Hope you enjoy and look forward to your comments. Still more to do, but I am pretty excited about this first step.

On the second, check out the links to Plink and Local-News. The Plink link uses SHA1(email address) as the key.

Local-News depends on calculating and then passing Lat/Long values taken from the user's Post/Zipcode. I find that one rather cool. ;-)

- We are exporting friends with only 3 fields: name, SHA1 of registered email, and public homepage URL

(1) Opt-in for the person exporting file has affect on his/her friends

(2) When sending mail to friends of friends, answering requires a person in the middle to protect email - how can FOAF help here?

(3) When invite to Tribe and accepting on a different email address there are unification processes that need to be explicit

(4) Import implies skeleton accounts. How do people later claim them?

(5) Update/consistency - where is the master record and what happens when they get out of sync?
