It looks right now that you can view anyone's FOAF profile. Which means you can view peoples birthdays and such that they may not want to be public.

i'm pretty sure birthday is optional.
i've imported a few FOAF files into my system already from tribe where the birthday was blank.
it must depend on whether or not you decide to include it in your public profile on tribe.
yes, technically the birthday is not shown but your age is derived from it.
