is there a standardized approach to creating these Unique ID's?

That is, it's the sha1sum hashing of one's email address, complete with the "mailto:" URI scheme prefix. -

i take it it's a one way MD5 kinda thing?
no way to get the email back out?

um.. who me? ;-)
i was just hoping to get as much information as possible out of these FOAF files.
just realized that the amount of information they currently contain is pretty sparse.
it would be nice to be able to fill a registration form or update a profile with the info. -

So in Mysql I just created another field for the sha1sum and updated it for all my users.
Update Users set foaf_mbox_sha1sum = sha1(concat("mailto:",Email));
now when i import the FOAF file i can also import any contacts who use the same email address between the two systems.
